At 12, when he was being groomed as a hot-shot hockey prospect who eventually starred for years in the NHL, a tall, handsome, mop-haired blond was also pushing for a career in baseball.
Pierre Turgeon was a star not only on the ice, but on the diamond as a pitcher and shortstop.
In 1982, he led his team from Rouyn-Noranda in Northern Quebec to two wins shy of the Little League Baseball World Series championship.
Twenty-five years later, the Little League Baseball's Hall of Excellence, in idyllic Williamsport, Pa., will enshrine Turgeon as its first Canadian inductee on Sunday in a ceremony before the Little League's 61st championship game.
“It's a phenomenal honour to be the first Canadian native inducted,” Turgeon said in a telephone interview. “I look at the list of lifetime inductees and I say wow. I see a lot of great baseball players and even U.S. President George Bush, singer Bruce Springsteen and actor Kevin Costner. It's not an honour I was expecting. It's something I'll never forget.”
